I’ve Studied Chinese for a While, So Why Can’t I Speak It?
Chinese Speaking Series, Part 1

You’ve been studying Chinese for a while
You know a lot of vocabulary. You understand more than you used to. You can recognize words when you read them, and you probably understand quite a bit when someone speaks slowly and clearly.
But then someone asks you a simple question in Chinese.
And suddenly, nothing comes out.
You know the words, but you can’t seem to put them together.
You start thinking about grammar. You search your memory for the right word. You translate from English in your head. By the time you are ready to answer, the conversation has already moved on.
If this sounds familiar, there is nothing wrong with your Chinese.
You simply need more practice turning the Chinese you know into the Chinese you can use.
This is one of the biggest challenges I see with students who have been learning Chinese for a while. They have built a good vocabulary and learned plenty of grammar, but speaking still feels difficult.
The solution isn’t always to learn more vocabulary.
Sometimes, the next step is learning how to connect the words you already know.
From Knowing Words to Using Words
Think about the difference between knowing these words:
夏天 xiàtiān summer
朋友 péngyǒu friend
旅行 lǚxíng travel
You may know all three words very well.
But knowing these words doesn’t automatically mean you can have a conversation about your summer.
This is where sentence patterns become useful.
Instead of building every sentence from scratch, you can learn a pattern that gives you a starting point.
For example:
___ 的時候,___。
___ de shíhou, ___.
This means “when…” or “during…”
Once you know this pattern, you can use it with vocabulary you already have.
夏天的時候,我常常去游泳。Xiàtiān de shíhou, wǒ chángcháng qù yóuyǒng.During the summer, I often go swimming.
放假的時候,我喜歡旅行。Fàngjià de shíhou, wǒ xǐhuān lǚxíng.When I’m on vacation, I like to travel.
有時間的時候,我會看電影。Yǒu shíjiān de shíhou, wǒ huì kàn diànyǐng.When I have time, I watch movies.
The pattern stays the same. You simply change the information.
That is exactly what makes sentence patterns so useful for speaking practice.
Let’s Build an Answer Together
Imagine someone asks you:
夏天的時候,你做了什麼?
Xiàtiān de shíhou, nǐ zuò le shénme?
What did you do during the summer?
You could answer:
我去旅行。
Wǒ qù lǚxíng.
I traveled.
That’s a good start.
Now let’s make the answer a little more interesting.
Step 1: Add the time
夏天的時候,我去旅行。
Xiàtiān de shíhou, wǒ qù lǚxíng.
During the summer, I traveled.
Step 2: Add who you were with
夏天的時候,我跟朋友一起去旅行。
Xiàtiān de shíhou, wǒ gēn péngyǒu yìqǐ qù lǚxíng.
During the summer, I traveled with my friends.
Here we are using another useful pattern:
跟……一起
gēn... yìqǐ
This means doing something with someone or together.
You can use it in many everyday situations:
我跟先生一起看電影。Wǒ gēn xiānsheng yìqǐ kàn diànyǐng.I watch movies with my husband.
我跟朋友一起吃飯。Wǒ gēn péngyǒu yìqǐ chīfàn.I eat with my friends.
我跟家人一起旅行。Wǒ gēn jiārén yìqǐ lǚxíng.I travel with my family.
Once you know the pattern, you can plug in your own words.
Step 3: Add your opinion
Now let’s add 覺得.
覺得 juédeto think, to feel, to find something to be...
For example:
我覺得很好玩。
Wǒ juéde hěn hǎowán.
I thought it was a lot of fun.
Now our answer is becoming a real conversation response:
夏天的時候,我跟朋友一起去旅行。我覺得很好玩。
Xiàtiān de shíhou, wǒ gēn péngyǒu yìqǐ qù lǚxíng. Wǒ juéde hěn hǎowán.
During the summer, I traveled with my friends. I thought it was a lot of fun.
Step 4: Tell us why
Now let’s add 因為.
因為yīnwèibecause
因為我們很久沒有一起旅行了。
Yīnwèi wǒmen hěn jiǔ méiyǒu yìqǐ lǚxíng le.
Because we hadn’t traveled together for a long time.
Put everything together:
夏天的時候,我跟朋友一起去旅行。我覺得很好玩,因為我們很久沒有一起旅行了。
Now you are not simply answering a question.
You are sharing an experience, giving an opinion, and explaining why you feel that way. And notice what we didn’t do. We didn’t learn twenty new vocabulary words.
We didn’t use complicated grammar. We took words and structures you may already know and practiced connecting them.
This Is How Conversations Grow
When students tell me they don’t know how to speak Chinese, I often find that they actually have a lot to say.
The challenge is knowing how to get from one sentence to the next.
A simple way to practice is:
Time → Activity → Person → Opinion → Reason → Follow-up
For example:
夏天的時候,我跟朋友一起去旅行。During the summer, I traveled with my friends.
我覺得很好玩。I thought it was a lot of fun.
因為我們很久沒有一起旅行了。Because we hadn’t traveled together for a long time.
Then you can bring the other person into the conversation:
你呢?
Nǐ ne?
How about you?
That’s a conversation.
Use Small Words to Say More
A few simple words can make a big difference in your speaking.
Here are some that I encourage students to practice regularly:
覺得 juédeI think / I feel
為什麼 wèishémewhy
因為 yīnwèibecause
但是 dànshìbut / however
你呢 nǐ nehow about you?
These words are simple, but they give you ways to connect your ideas.
For example:
我覺得很好玩,但是有一點累。Wǒ juéde hěn hǎowán, dànshì yǒu yìdiǎn lèi.I think it’s a lot of fun, but I’m a little tired.
你為什麼喜歡旅行?Nǐ wèishéme xǐhuān lǚxíng?Why do you like traveling?
因為我喜歡看新的地方。Yīnwèi wǒ xǐhuān kàn xīn de dìfang.Because I like seeing new places.
These are the building blocks of everyday Chinese conversation.
Now It’s Your Turn
Don’t just read this section. Say it out loud.
Start with:
週末的時候,我 __________。
Zhōumò de shíhou, wǒ __________.
On the weekend, I __________.
Now add someone:
週末的時候,我跟 __________ 一起 __________。
Zhōumò de shíhou, wǒ gēn __________ yìqǐ __________.
On the weekend, I __________ with __________.
Now add your opinion:
我覺得 __________。
Wǒ juéde __________.
I think __________.
Then give a reason:
因為 __________。
Yīnwèi __________.
Because __________.
Finally:
你呢?
Nǐ ne?
How about you?
Try saying the whole answer without looking at your notes. If you get stuck, that’s okay. In fact, getting stuck can be useful. It shows you exactly where you need more practice. Maybe you need more vocabulary. Maybe you need to practice a sentence pattern. Maybe you understand the grammar but need more experience using it in real time. That’s where focused speaking practice can make a difference.
Why Work With an Instructor?
Self-study is a great way to build vocabulary and learn grammar. But speaking requires something different.
You need to use the language in real time.
You need someone to ask you an unexpected question.
You need to find a way to answer with the words you know.
You need opportunities to try, make mistakes, try again, and discover more natural ways to express yourself.
That’s where working with an instructor can help.
In a lesson, we can take something as simple as:
夏天的時候,你做了什麼?
and turn it into a real conversation.
Maybe you answer:
我去旅行。
Instead of simply moving on, I can help you build from there.
Who did you go with?
Where did you go?
How was it?
Why did you go?
Would you go again?
What about your friend?
Each question gives you another opportunity to use Chinese.
As you practice, you start recognizing these patterns and using them more naturally.
You also get feedback on things that can be difficult to notice when you study alone, such as word choice, sentence structure, pronunciation, and how to make your Chinese sound more natural.
Most importantly, you get to practice talking about your own life, your own opinions, and your own experiences.
That’s the kind of speaking practice that builds confidence.
You Probably Know More Chinese Than You Think
If you’ve been studying Chinese for a while but still don’t feel confident speaking, don’t assume you need to learn everything all over again.
Start with what you already know.
Take a word you recognize.
Put it into a sentence pattern.
Add a detail.
Give your opinion.
Explain why.
Then ask the other person a question.
Little by little, a short answer becomes a conversation.
You don’t need perfect Chinese before you start speaking. You build better Chinese by speaking.
And you don’t have to figure it all out on your own.
If you’re ready to move beyond memorizing vocabulary and start using your Mandarin Chinese in real conversations, I’d love to help you practice.
In my lessons, we work with the Chinese you already know, build stronger speaking habits, and gradually help you say more with greater confidence.
You don’t need to wait until your Chinese is perfect.
